Description
J. Lolua's 1995 illustration "Tbilisi Contrasts" is a sharp satire on the severe economic crisis, hyperinflation, and extreme social inequality of 1990s Georgia. The drawing shows a sharp social contrast: on one side stand luxurious foreign-brand cars, indicating the opulence of a small, newly enriched segment of society. The irony of the illustration is particularly highlighted by the caption written on the artwork: "Buy two Snickers bars for Jeka as well" ("ორი სნიკერსი ჯეკასაც უყიდე"), showing that wealthy individuals are buying imported sweets for their dog, while right in front of them, ordinary people are scavenging through the trash. The artwork bitterly ridicules the social chaos reigning in the country, where poverty erased all boundaries.
