Description
G. Isaev's 1936 illustration "The Puppet" is a sharp political satire against fascist alliances and puppet governments. A doll-like figure depicted with an Eastern hat and a braid symbolically represents the powerless state created by Japan - Manchukuo. The drawing ironically reflects Manchukuo's recognition of Spanish General Franco's regime, presenting it as an act performed on orders from Rome. The scroll held by the figure is precisely this document of "recognition," which satirically signifies the unquestioning execution of the master's will. The artwork ridicules the international political theater, where artificial regimes attempt to legitimize aggressive forces.
