Perestroika (Restructuring), 1987. Artist: J. Lolua.
Material: canvas

Description

J. Lolua's 1987 illustration "Restructuring" echoes the period of Perestroika (Restructuring) and Glasnost (Openness). The drawing depicts the huge hands of an official holding a Rubik's cube, with a red question mark and a confused, frightened face drawn above it. The Rubik's cube symbolically represents the complex process of "Restructuring" itself, which this bureaucrat cannot manage to "assemble" or control, as indicated by the confused face inside the question mark. The official opposes openness, hinders quality, fails to keep promises, and remains locked in his office, completely detached from the new demands of the times. Warnings and criticism from the press or television no longer affect him; he is occupied only with personal gain, inflating staff sizes, and drinking. Ultimately, the illustration highlights that such officials are incapable of keeping pace with the new era and reforms, making it necessary to remove them from office and transfer them to other work.
