Description
The 1935 illustration "Family Happiness" is a sharp satire on the Soviet bureaucratic system and political atmosphere. The family depicted in the drawing is joyfully celebrating an event with dancing and music, which at first glance resembles a wedding. However, the accompanying text reveals that the reason for the euphoria is Valodia's dismissal from his position as director and his transfer to a quiet job as a cashier at a railway station. The plot ironically reflects the reality of the time: a high post was associated with great risk and danger, while a career demotion to a "quiet" position was perceived by the family as relief and safety. The artwork ridicules the absurdity of people celebrating a retreat from responsibility instead of success.
