Price Reduction, 1932. Artist: Simon Nadareishvili.
Material: canvas

Description

Simon Nadareishvili's 1932 illustration "Price Reduction" is a political-economic satire on the obstacles encountered on the path to implementing a government decree regarding price reductions. In the drawing, a worker tries with all his might to pull down a price indicator arrow. He is hindered in this process by various hostile forces, such as speculators, kulaks, saboteurs, and lukewarm workers, who pull the prices upward with ropes from different sides and do not allow the worker to fully execute the order. Against the background of this tense struggle, a bureaucrat stands in the lower part of the picture, who, instead of helping the worker, warns him not to break the mechanism with excessive effort. This illustration sharply exposes the fact that the implementation of the country's economic policy and changes for the benefit of the people are hindered not only by the open or hidden resistance of class enemies, but also by the indifferent and obstructive attitude of opportunist and bureaucratic officials, who are effectively sabotaging the common socialist cause.
