Weapons, 1931. Artist: Simon Nadareishvili.
Material: canvas

Description

Simon Nadareishvili's 1931 illustration "Weapons" is a sharp satirical exposure of capitalist and imperialist states regarding the issues of disarmament and peace. The drawing depicts an extremely militarized scene where the sky is filled with military airplanes, warships are deployed on the sea surface, and the underwater space is entirely occupied by numerous submarines. Against the backdrop of this universal arming, a terrified fish is shown worrying that, due to the abundance of enemy vessels, it can no longer find a peaceful shelter even in the sea. The main idea of the illustration is to show the hypocrisy and falsehood of Western countries, which verbally claim to support peace and disarmament initiatives, but in reality, actively continue frantic rearmament and preparation for war in every possible sphere - in the air, on the water, and underwater. This caricature highlights the aggressive nature of the capitalist world and mocks its false, hypocritical peace rhetoric.
