Description
G. Lomidze's 1954 illustration "Severe Agitation" is a sharp political satire of Western imperialism and militarism. In the drawing, a hand extending from a sleeve bearing the initials of the French Republic (RF) collapses a house of cards ("buduga") with the flick of a finger. The cards feature targets of Soviet propaganda: American capitalists with dollar signs, European military figures with swastikas and cannons, and clerics holding bombs instead of crosses. The plot reflects France's rejection of the "European Defense Community" treaty, which caused panic on Wall Street. The collapse of the house of cards symbolically represents the failure of the militaristic plans of the US and its allies, exposing the fragility of Western military alliances.
